This book is the result of a significant amount of research into the background and development of al Qaeda and is a useful source of information on both al Qaeda and Osama bin Laden. The book is structured around the locations of significant milestones in al Qaeda's growth - Pakistan, Sudan and Afghanistan. Significant chapters concentrate on the ideology of al Qaeda's leadership as well as the international network of sympathisers and 'cells'. Whilst it is difficult to corroborate some of the author's sources, this book remains an extremely accessible account for those wishing to learn more about the expansion of al Qaeda from its genesis in counter-Soviet operations up to the attacks in America in 2001.
