Muslim rulers and rebels : everyday politics and armed separatism in the southern Philippines

RegionsWorld

Although it was published more than a decade ago, this book still provides the best available account of the conflict in the southern Philippines. The book situates the conflict against the backdrop of major shifts in Philippine politics and shows how armed separatist insurgency is deeply enmeshed within webs of local political and economic power. The ethnographic account also provides important insights into the lived experiences of ordinary Muslims in the southern Philippines in terms of Islam, armed conflict, and everyday struggles for survival in the context of widespread poverty, large-scale displacement, and continuing hardship.
