Empowering Communities to Prevent Violent Extremism

De-radicalisation

The Handbook of the Criminology of TerrorismChapter summary

This chapter enumerates fourteen recommendations for law enforcement, other government, and community-based organizations to advance their countering violent extremism (CVE) efforts, based on the experiences of CVE practitioners who attended a national CVE summit in August of 2014. Each recommendation is contextualized with examples and associated challenges as articulated by the attendees. The fourteen recommendations represent a learning process, in which the summit attendees learned the pragmatic and proactive value of CVE efforts, that law enforcement organizations ultimately have a supporting but not leading role to play in CVE efforts, and that CVE efforts are best integrated into broader programs to enhance community resilience to many hazards, including but not limited to violent extremism.
